Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear – the gap-filling expansion

Companions and enemies

As for the combat itself and game item mechanics, nothing has changed so I do not think I have to repeat that. There are hundreds of new items, but they work the same way as before. Most of them are not even that interesting really, they are mostly good for selling. And as for that, the are some of the shops in Baldur’s Gate which were previously in BGEE, and you can use those. Later with the expedition you go on to stop the Crusade, there is a merchant present in your camp.

And there’s even a blacksmith in the keep near Boareskyr bridge who can make special items, mostly different types of armor. Besides armor made from beast shells or scales, he can also make special armor for one of the new companions, M’Khiin. She is a goblin shaman, the first goblin ever that you can control in the game. Other than her, there is the already mentioned Corwin (archer). Another two new characters are Glint, a gnome cleric/thief, and Voghiln, a human warrior.

The enemies include many beasts and animals from BGEE, though not all of them. But there are some new ones as well. Those include more bug species including really giant bugs. Than there are a couple more demon/fiend species. Some of them just look like bags of fat and are quite easy to kill actually, but some are quite tough.

Quite a strange beast is this Neothelid. It seems like a group of worms. You can find it in the old Bhaals temple. It can move underground and it is somewhat tougher to kill. It is basically an overgrown illithid tadpole. And speaking of about mind flayers, there are some more illithids further on in the temple as well. Hate those things and their mind-controlling magic!

The kings of all creatures are always dragons of course. Dragons were absent in BGEE but in Siege of Dragonspear you encounter them, thanks to increased level/experience cap (to 500000 XP). You do not have to actually slay the green dragon as you can just pass around him. It was initially quite tough to kill for me with the low characters levels. But I soon found its weakness: electricity. So in the hit&run manner, I always hit it with couple lightning wands and then run away. The Morentherene is too big to follow you lower into the dungeon so you can run there each time. After three rounds the dragon was no more.
