If you have 640GB now, then 1GB will be a significant downgrade

Biggest here is my 500GB external. Biggest internal is 320GB

What about a new 2TB hard disk drive such as Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB, Western Digital 20EURS or Hitachi 5k3000 2TB. All the three models are low spin speed ones, which means they are relatively slower than the contemporary 7200RPM HDDs. So I suggest you to use them as your storage disk rather than your system disk. The WD and Hitachi ones are 5400RPM and the seagate is 5900RPM. Seagate Barracuda Green 2T and WD 20EURS have 4KB sectors (advanced format) whereas the Hitachi has traditional 512B sectors (drives have 512B sectors will save you some trouble if you use old OS such as windows XP because old system like XP doesn't support 4KB sectors).

Definitely go with A Western Digital drive. For a boot disk, I recommend a WD Velociraptor, and aWD Caviar Blue for storage.
Or to make it easier just get like a 1TB WD Caviar Black.

What about an SSD?

OK, for those 3 2TB options, I wouldn't have a problem with Seagate or WD, but yes, avoid the Hitachi deathstar.

Well, high capacity solid state drivers are very expensive!
