Are hybrid drives over-rated?

While I haven't actually used a system with one, it seems to me that the speed-up compared to a plain HDD would be too inconsistent, and that the flash memory would wear out much faster than in a proper SSD. So what do you think? In my view, they're a stop-gap measure at best; I'd prefer to either stay with a regular HDD, or go all the way and set up a system with independent SSD (for the OS and applications) and HDD(s) (for user data, installers, and multimedia) — or even use an SSD alone if capacity is less important.

Hybrid drives don't seem to get that much hype at all from enthusiasts. The only time I would ever suggest or use one is when you need more than 250GB of storage in a laptop with only 1 HDD bay.
