I've got this in my server.
It's got mostly Panasonic capacitors.
Is this one vulnerable to the nVidia chipset meltdown?

Yup. ALL socket AM2 and 775 boards with nVidia chipsets were affected. You could probably extend its life somewhat by screwing a 40mm fan to the heat sink. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835221004 looks like it would do the job. I use them on chipsets myself. They're a bit on the loud side but they are reliable and that chipset needs all the cooling you can throw at it.

If you insist on it being quiet, though (and don't mind paying a bit more), then you could replace the cooler with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835233021 (and maybe zip-tie a fan to it and run it at 5v).

But what if it's not getting very hot, should I still put that crazy looking heatsink on?

The nearly always do when they are working hard, but if you are sure it only gets warm then just add the fan
