Here are some of the best ways to get better SEO for your website:
-Lots of high-quality content: without good content, your site won't show up very well in search engines. And if you don't show up in search engines, you won't get visitors to your site.
-Backlinks: one of the best ways to get your site ranked higher is to have many quality backlinks to and from your site. The more links there are to your site, the better! Make sure you only get backlinks to high quality sites. Backlinks from low quality sites can actually lower your ranking.
-Minimize broken links: All search engines hate broken links. Make sure to regularly check and update all links from your site.

Some SEO warnings:
-Many "link farms" or other "SEO" sites can actually use techniques that are not allowed by Google or other search engines. If your site gets banned from search engines, that's a very big issue, so avoid crappy sites entirely, and make sure you trust any SEO sites you use!

That's a good start.

if you don't show up in search engines, you won't get visitors to your site.

That's accurate to an extent. Good promotion online or even offline would definitely get you decent traffic, but search engines will give you the gold mine.

Backlinks from low quality sites can actually lower your page rank.

I'm not sure about that claim. If it was true, you could create another site, get on Google's blacklist, then link to all of your competitors to hurt them. You can't control who links to you, so Google can't use that factor to harm you, unless of course you have practically all of your inbound links coming from blacklisted sites. Yes you want to avoid them, but I doubt Google would give you a huge penalty for being linked to from 1 or 2 blacklisted sites.

EDIT: Just reviewed what you said. I was referencing ranking, not PR. Also, you say it CAN influence rank. I read it as it WILL, which is another thing entirely.

If your site gets banned from search engines, that's a very big issue, so avoid crappy sites entirely, and make sure you trust any SEO sites you use!

I do agree with that - getting banned is a bad thing. Avoid the bad sites entirely.

Also as a little extra tidbit, forget PR. PR has been overhyped for way too long, and it's not really relevant to your SERPs. Focus on rankings.

Good advice, the best things you can do for good SEO are:

A) Use appropriate META tags. Don't use loads of keywords, as this doesn't help.
B) Submit your site to popular search engines such as Google, Bing & Yahoo.

You should add some SEO tags to this forum. You may have them already, if you do, they're in the wrong place as I can't find any in your source code, and you should be able to find them easily if they're in place correctly.

Go to: Admin CP --> Template & Style --> Templates --> Your Template --> Index Page templates --> Index.

Find: <head> - Underneith it add the following lines:

Code: Select all
<meta name="description" content="DESCRIPTIONGOESHERE" />

<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword 2, keyword 3, etc" />
