A developer calling himself “Eazy Black” has recently published an ununofficial build of the Steam client, based on one of the latest beta versions, which runs on Windows 7 again. Since Steam cut support for Win 7 (as a reaction on its chromish core phasing-out 7 support, as it is basically just a web browser with some extra stuff hooked onto it) early this year, the application kept running, but as they recently came up with new encryption, all downloads gradually became corrupted, so besides the already installed games, you could not get any new ones (or updates for the already installed).
Some time later, the client worked for a while yet again with Windows extended kernel (VxKex) project, but its development ceased last year. In the meantime, it has been picked up from the dust again as VxKex-NEXT, but that still did not make it work since about november. Now, with this build made to fit Win 7, millions of Win 7 users around the world got early X-mass gift, with the client fully working once again. You can get the builds for Win 7 (and also experimentally for Win 8) at w7revived. Fully updated version of the OS is highly recommended to make the client run.
We do not know for how long the client is going to work since Valve may decide to deliberately start blocking this unofficial variant, or they may simply come up with some changes again, rendering older version of the client no longer capable of connecting to their servers, or corrupting data. So hurry up and grab it while you still can, to install as many games as you can from your library!
