Dear readers,
I would like to inform all of you that Callum has just passed the ownership of the Hardware Insights website on to me. I will try to keep up the good work and push the website to even higher level. There are already great plans for that, some changes have already taken place. That includes some changes in website appearance – there has been a change for higher resolution (1024- resolutions are long dead) which will give HWI the option to show bigger images. Don’t hesitate to report any glitches in this area.
I am also bringing my own testing equipment and evaluation methodology, which will be published shortly. This methodology already runs on Czech DiiT website I write for (and most articles are just translations of articles already published there) and while it is probably one of the most complicated methodologies ever created, I think it is also one of the most advanced of them. Units not even complying with ATX standard will not pass (unlike on other websites). This will effectively replace Callums methodology and equipment. I will also try to keep higher standard of the reviews itself, I think my images are already of better quality (for the most part, my aging Lumix DMC-FZ4 could surely take some upgrade), while articles (like the ones about repairing things) are somewhat less-important so the images will not be taken in photo-studio-like conditions (which requires extra work, time etc.).
The general idea is to bring much more content to HWI and drive the visitor stats and hopefully, one day to compete even with such sites like Jonny Guru, HardOCP etc. You can help with that! Visit the website regularly, soon we will resurrect existing and setup new groups on social media and networks. I would also like the website to start generating some money, so far it barely made enough to run. Running such project is a difficult and expensive task and sophisticated (and expensive) equipment is needed. And of course, the staff themselves need some money to live if they are expected to do it professionally and as a full-time job, right? Lets be honest, you cannot do professional power supply or case testing while living on the street. And you cannot do that while working 10 hours a day somewhere else. Also, one man is not capable of doing it all alone if he is expected to do it properly and thoroughly. I already have much more sample offers (especially after CeBIT) than I can manage to process.
You can also help with this! I am willing to let go of some less-interesting and less-gainful activities and focus on writing, if I am sure the writing can support my living over those activities. The website needs advertisement, so you can all pass the word or even buy some space yourself! Marketing materials and price lists will be available soon. I would also like to start accepting donations in some crowdfund style so you can yourself select what you would like to support, in other words, what would you personally prefer: you like El Cheapo roundup? OK, donate so I can buy some new junk (nobody is willing to send anything like that for a review, obviously). You want me to measure much more precisely? Sure, I can definitely use a new advanced power meter instead of that child toy! And the plans for professional load tester of my own design are also in my head for some time. You want me to review computer cases like a pro’? I guess I would need a sonometer for that…and oh, what about UPS? Sure, I am working on UPS loader already, but could use some transformers for more thorough testing, etc. Or you can just support the staff, I mean, me ☺ Your choice!
Another possible way to support me is to support my capacitor business. I am trying to get all those hard-to-get and special capacitors for computers and similar electronics for you. But it is all pointless unless you buy them, right ☺
