Preview: Cooler Master G550M – modular cabling with 5-year warranty

The Cooler Master G550M is a member of quite a new family of (semi) modular power supplies. They are made by Channel Well Technology and Cooler Master provides 5-year warranty. The minor problem is they only come with 80 PLUS Bronze (@115 V) certification (supposedly from 2013 – seems that original CWT certificate is being re-used again) but at the moment cost even more than the golden V550S which dropped in price (even though that may be sellout of older revision models), at least here in CZ.

In that case they should have top components inside and perform even better, otherwise what would be the point of such unit which would be worse than lower priced model from the same company? The G550M at least has one +12V supply internally with DC-DC switchers for +3.3/+5 V rails, but clearly we can see the unit is being forced as lower-end as it can only provide slightly over 500 W on 12 V. Most other units with such topology provide close to (or even over) 100 % of rated power on +12 V rail which is most important in modern computers.

With price starting at 2100 CZK (or 89 AUD) we are barely in mainstream so here the modular cabling and 5-year warranty is actually not that bad. Also DC-DC modules are used, many other units of similar price still use group design. So stay tuned for deep component analysis and some load testing!
