The newest version of Smart-UPS, Schneider design. Labeled 750 VA/500 W, has some interesting options through the integrated LCD panel and keyboard. Line-interactive, sine wave output.

Smart-UPS 450 Net (SU450INET)

Most likely second generation of Smart-UPS family, the SU450INET seems like a miniaturized version of all the later models. Even the butons are smaller. This particular unit is over 18 years old and upon repalcing couple dying capacitors, it works like a charm. Line-interactive 450VA/280W device with sine-wave output (as well as all the others). The idle power draw is about 19 watts.

Smart-UPS 700 Net (SU700INET)

This is most likely a second generation Smart-UPS, as well as the SU450INET. The size/power is between later 420VA and 1kVA models. Output power of 700 VA/450 W, line-interactive and of course with sine wave output. Some of the units are configured to output the full labeled apparent power value as a real power with power factor of 1. (That means, a 700VA unit is indeed capable of outputting 700 W, while most of them only provide 450 W.)

Smart-UPS 900 (SU900I)

These 2G (most likely) units were manufactured before 1996, when APC introduced their Smart protocol. That means while they have very fine sine-wave output, they still only provide voltage signalling, aka dumb signalling. These particular pieces provide 900 VA (630 W) and although their chassis is plastic, it was already made like a tank. (Compare with todays recycled plastics which often melt or became a pile of dust in just a few years). Even after the years, their transfer times are still good enough to satisfy even HP server power supplies.

Smart-UPS 1000 Net (SU1000INET)

The SU1000INET is classical 1000VA/670W brick-type model, line-interactive, sine wave output. It uses 12/15Ah batteries, may take up to 22 Ah but fan cooling may be required. The idle power draw is 22.5 W.

The charging waveform shows usual impulses known from Smart-UPS family. It seems that the UPS was trying to desulfate the batteries.

Smart-UPS 1000 VA USB & Serial (SUA1000I)

The SUA1000I is approximately fourth or fifth generation Smart-UPS (although APC itself calls it 3.5G on the PCB), has USB and serial connectors. Labeled power is 1 kVA/670 W. Line-interactive, sine wave output. No-load power load is just about 16 W (with 15A Panasonic accumulators). Inverter efficiency under full load is about 85 %. I have already met a unit configured to output 1000 W of real power with power factor of 1 (while most units only output 670 W), similarly to the SU700INET above.

Smart-UPS 1400 Net (SU1400INET)

The SU1400INET is just uprated 1000VA model at 1400 VA/950 W, nothing else to see there, it just has fan to keep temperatures down when running for extended time. It coems with larger accumulators (17Ah original). So still the same line-interactive, sine wave output. The idle power draw is about 22 W with 20Ah Panasonic accumulators. It is also worth mentioning that many of these old models can actually deliver the labeled apparent power as active power withpower factor close to 1. In this case the unit delivered as much as 1350 W, although I loaded it from batteries only with 1250 W and it was nto able to hold the output voltage, which was declining towards 200 V as the accumulators discharged. Still it could easily deliver about 1.1 kW with output still in spec, compared to later models only outputting rated 950 W (980 W for 1500VA SUA1500I, see below).

The SUA1500I is higher rated variant of SUA1000I above: rated power is 1.5 kVA/980 W. Line-interactive, sine wave output. Peak inverter efficiency under full load is roughly 81 %.

This time there are very high pulses, definitely desulfation. It is possible I did not have the negative electrode grounded thus the high ripple value.

Smart-UPS 2200 VA (SU2200INET)

A double-decker version of ordinary Smart-UPS with compartment for two battery packs in the lower part. The power is 2.2 kVA/1.6 kW, line-interactive, sine wave output. Idle power draw is 36 W.

Smart-UPS 2200VA USB & Serial (SUA2200I)

Newer version of the SU2200INET above, active power increased to 1980 W, other parameters are the same. Idle power consumption is about 53 W, sometimes dives under 30 W but only for a fraction of a second.

Smart-UPS SC

Smart-UPS SC 420 VA (SC420I)

Even though a part of the Smart-UPS family, the SC epithet indicates screwup cutoffs and modified square wave output! Many APC materials do not say anything about the waveform, others even wrongly call this unit sine wave output. From current models on the market, only Smart-UPS models starting with SMT750I have true sine wave output. Line-interactive topology with “iteration aproximation to a sine wave”, power of 420 VA/260 W. Idle power draw of 11 W.

Smart-UPS 620 Net (SU620INET)

While this 620VA/390W model carries the name of the Smart-UPS series, looking at just the front panel you can clearly see it is not full-blown Smart-UPS. Possibly a first generation, bridge between Back-UPS Pro and later established Smart-UPS SC series as the electronics is pretty much the same as in these two, but it already supports all the features the SC units do. The inverter however only provides the typical modified square wave (aka iteration aproximation to a sinewave). With 15Ah accumulator the idle power draw is 12.5 W. Inverter efficiency peaks slightly over 78 %.

Smart-UPS SC 620 VA (SC620I)

It is line-interactive topology, the same “iteration aproximation to a sine wave” (this information has been added only recently). Power of 620 VA/390 W. Idle power consumption with 15Ah accumulator is under 11 W.
